A first birthday party filled with cacti and babies, doesn't seem like the most logical combo but it certainly was a fiesta to remember! When planning this monumental birthday lots of time and thought went into picking that perfect theme. Given Fitzgerald's avidity for Mexican food, my slight obsession with all things cacti, and a play on words that was just meant to be. There was nothing more fitting than "Fitz's First Fiesta". Check out the details of the fun filled fiesta below.
The Fiesta theme was captured with potted succulents and cacti that we used as decorations, that also doubled as party favors. I bought all of the clay pots from Michael's and replanted the succulents we found at Home Depot (that thankfully I kept alive for over a week, given I have no green thumb this was a huge feat...yes they're succulents and I only watered once, but still!). We also used maracas as decor and party favors for the little ones which were a huge hit, you can find those here. Since we are still settling into our new home, we hosted at our neighborhood park that has a wonderful playground and pavilion. We set up a water table, sand toys, and play balls for all the kids to enjoy.
The invitations were the first thing I found, which really helped to set the tone for the rest of the party. I found these beautiful ones by Bohemian Woods on Etsy that you can find here. The best part was I was able to download them immediately, send, and print on card-stock at Costco. This was a wonderful way to save a little, while also having the beauty of paper invitations.
Fitzgerald rocked the most adorable cacti bottoms from Little Huddy Duds that you can find here (Use FITZ10 at checkout to receive a 10% off on your order). I wore this super cute open shoulder dress from Pink Blush, you can find here, it was so perfect for the theme and beyond comfortable! We of course had to have lots of balloons and I just love the huge gold mylar balloons! We had little touches of the gold and green throughout with UNO being highlighted in the little details (and large) with the UNO balloons. The extent of my crafting abilities is highlighted in Fitzgerald's highchair decor. I combined the green and gold tassel garland from Target and made an UNO banner that matched our Fitz's First Fiesta banner. This having been my first attempt at "crafting", I was pleased with how cute it turned out!
One of the best tips for party planning is to go the catered food route. We chose Chipotle because it is hands down Fitzgerald's absolute favorite food! It's truly impressive how much the little guy can take down! Chipotle catering provided everything we needed including the hot serving trays, utensils, and the portion sizes were huge (hello leftovers!). Having the food prepared streamlined the preparation process and it was a major bonus that I was not held up in the kitchen all morning prepping food. The adorable and amazingly delicious cupcakes were made by a family friend. And the big one year old's sahuaro cactus cake was made by Whole Foods; we chose their vanilla butter cream flavor that was just divine. Being an advocate for Baby Led Weaning and with my background in working with clients with Eating Disorders, I'm a huge proponent that there is no such thing as bad foods, including sugar. This was Fitzgerald's first taste of sugar (aside from fruit) and the cake smash was epic!! Fitzgerald did not hold back on his first taste of sugar, as he demolished nearly half the cake! After the sugar high and the goodbyes it was time for the little guy to finally siesta. Fitzgerald's birthday fiesta was certainly filled with fun and will be memories we will cherish forever! Hope these details help to inspire your next Fiesta!
