My husband and I just celebrated our five year wedding anniversary, and we are about to cross the two plus a decade this Fall of being together. I'm truly beyond grateful for my husband, becoming parents has deepened our love and connection to another level that I treasure. We were always a team since we became a "we" but the bond we share as parents is sacred. I initially thought I would share some advice on how to stay a "we" after you become one + two equals three! But, I thought it better to save that for another time. Instead I'm sharing how my husband and I stay connected and a little about our little love story. Plus, I'm sharing the incredible photo shoot we did with the talented Alyssa Ryan Photography at Hermosa Inn to commemorate our five year wedding anniversary.
First, a little about our love story. We met the first week of my freshmen year in college. While I was at the clubs fair he approached me and asked me if I would be interested in being a coxswain for the men's rowing team. He tried to lure me in with idea of getting up early, yelling at them, and steering the boat, needless to say he had already lost me at getting up early. I said goodbye and set off on my merry way to find the Equestrian team, but that smile left an imprint on my heart that day. Luckily we were the first generation of Facebook users geared only for and within your college. So when my suite-mates (thanks babes!) convinced me to create a profile and I somehow stumbled upon a familiar smiley dimpled green eyed boy, I quickly clicked the friend button. After a few messages and AIM conversations (yes we really are that old!) a first date was in the mix. As we sat on a bench deep in conversation eating ice cream, I knew this guy was special. As they often say, the rest is history, this is true, but I'll give you the readers digest version of where it went from there. We dated throughout college, ventured into the scary World of post college together, gradually built our confidences of what it meant to "adult" (yes, I'm using that as a verb), a move to sunny Arizona, graduate school, and a house later. We got married on the gorgeous and special island of Maui, the Hawaiian islands are very dear to us. Five years, several jobs, a baby, who is now a one year old, and another move later we are continually amazed by each other.
Since becoming parents are lives have changed tremendously (obviously) but we seriously are busy with our very busy boy. So making time for each other is essential. Okay time for a real life confession, up until this photo shoot the longest we both had been away from our little man was twenty minutes. Yes, we are those crazy parents, so how do we make time for each other you might wonder? We make time every single day. Because you make that which is important to you a priority in your day. We sit and chat every night, whether over a family meal, or cuddled on the couch, we make sure we talk. We always hug and kiss each other before we say goodbye and when we say hello. We text, FaceTime, and/or call each other during the day to say hi, quickly catch up, or just to say I love you. We make our home our oasis, for us, we are home bodies, so making our home the place where we relax and have our own space is key. We have FUN. Whether it's doing something totally out of the norm, like this photo shoot, or playing soccer with our son. We acknowledge and stay committed to the fact that because of our love, we have been blessed to become parents together, but our union is what came first, and always needs to be the strong foundation for our family to continue to flourish.
To my love, my husband, my best friend, my one and only partner in this World. I thank God for you every day. I cannot imagine this World without you in it. You have given me everything and more than I ever could have dreamed of. I thank you for making me laugh every single day, for getting up at the crack of dawn so I may sleep that little extra bit, and for always loving Fitzgerald and I so fiercely. I love you babe!
