Oh Summer! I've never had a love/hate relationship with you until this year. I've spent ten summers in the desert, and never have I been so bogged down by the heat until now! I'd say that all has to do with my busy tot! Triple digits and a tot do not mix. I've been refining the art of how to keep cool and keep busy with your even busier tot. Here's a few of my tips, plus some of the great products from Nuby USA that has helped make that possible!
Water it is your friend, your lifeline, your go to when you need to occupy and cool down your tot! We've made our rounds around the splash pads in town and a few of our favorites are the pad at Luci's at the Orchard, Scottsdale Quarter, and the Phoenix Zoo. Splash pads are so much fun! And what makes them more exciting for my little guy is when he has something to play with in the water. Enter the Splash N Catch bath net! This has been gold for Fitzgerald, when he's not using it to play in the water, he carries this net all around the house and loves "releasing" his fish from the net over and over again. This is one of those toys that is easy, functional, and fun for mama and tot! I highly recommend the Splash N Catch bath net. Want to win one?! Head over to my Instagram to enter the giveaway to win one of these fantastic Nuby USA toys. Need yours right away? You can shop it on Amazon here.
Get Creative! When it comes to trying to find a healthy stride with your tot when you don't have access to the outdoors between those often precarious hours of post nap but pre-dinner (i.e. "It's baking like a toasted cheeser" outside and your tot is tired, hungry, and aimelessly distroying the house) you need to think outside the box, or rather get in the box. We have the goal to not be overtaken by toys in this house and only until very recently did we have a family movie night (we watched "Moana", of course!), so we use items that have the opportunity to spark creativity. So while we are playing with our toy boats, like this one from Nuby USA, we get in the box and pretend to be on a boat. Yes, this may sound corny, but a mama has to do what a mama has to do, am I right?! Also, Fitz loves boxes more than most toys, like I said here, I've learned not to spend money on expensive toys. You can find these cute boats this Nuby toy at Amazon here.
Hydration is everything! When it's triple digits out, you've got to be religious about making sure these busy tots stay hydrated. While we are fortunate enough to be continuing our journey of nursing at almost 16 months, I still make every effort to offer water at all hours of the day. When we are out on the run, I always have a water bottle handy for him. I've found that my little guy prefers really cold water, so I make sure to load up on ice water before we head out. We also get creative, I've added hints of lemon, strawberry, or cucumber to his water to make it more interesting to him and he often drinks more when I do offer a change here and there. I love this water canteen by Nuby USA; first, it's super cute and second, it's easy for him to handle, and is one of the very few that has not broken under the wrath that is a tot that favors the 3ft drop game (i.e. chucks everything off of his high chair, including the water canteen!). Want your own Nuby USA canteen, the new Nuby thirsty kids active water canteen (pictured below) will be arriving soon to Babies R’ Us stores. Can’t wait?! Shop the Nuby thirsty kids reflex water canteens in store at Target or online here.
Now that it's July, my eyes are set on the monsoon horizon and finding comfort in the fact that the triple digit weather will be ending soon. I hope you all are staying cool and making the most out of your summer! I'd love to hear your ideas of how you stay cool and busy your tot in the summer! Please share in the comments below.
